My favorite time of year is when spring slowly turns into summer. The never ending rain showers finally turn into rays of sunshine, flowers begin to bloom, and there's still that light cool breeze to break up the impending May heat.
I find my favorite fashions this time of year as well. Stores still carry spring items but are also stocking up on cute summer staples. This summer promises to be full of off the shoulder dresses, more rompers, and of course...crop tops. I have been DYING to pull out a crop top I purchased last summer, but barely got a chance to wear. However, being 9 months pregnant, with a huge belly, didn't give me much hope that I'd be wearing my fave crop top any time soon.
Then, I remembered this look Kerry Washington rocked at the 2014 SAG Awards while pregnant. While most people wouldn't dare to wear a hot-pink bedazzled crop top even on a normal day, Kerry somehow makes the look seem effortless and elegant, reminding all the soon-to-be moms that pregnancy doesn't have to mean 9 months of maternity wear, it just means sometimes you have to get a little creative with your wardrobe.
Channeling my inner Kerry (after all I don't think even Olivia Pope would have the guts to wear that sparkling top) I pulled out my favorite crop top and determined I would make it work. Throughout my pregnancy I've bought as little clothes as possible, since my goal is to get back to that pre-baby weight. That being said, it has become a challenge finding items already in my closet to go over my large and in charge baby bump. After pretty much tearing my closet apart, I landed on the perfect combination, that not only looked pretty but was comfortable as well.
ESSENTIALS TO THE PERFECT SUMMER MATERNITY OUTFIT
Loose Fitting Crop Top: I recommend buying a looser crop top simply because it's easier to get over a baby belly.
Pencil Skirt: For the pencil skirt, you will want to purchase one made out of stretchy material. The one I chose to wear is made out of polyester and spandex, which allowed me to pull it over my baby belly and cover any extra skin shown by the crop top. AVOID SKIRTS WITH SLITS! Even if a slit doesn't appear to be cut too high, trust me after being pulled over your belly that slit will be something you don't want showing in public.
Jacket or Blazer: I am a jacket/blazer fanatic, who has way too many options in my closet. I love to throw on a fun blazer to pull an outfit together. I recommend wearing a blazer/jacket in a bright color or fun material, such as leather, to really make a statement.
Wedges or Gladiator Sandals: It wouldn't be summer without a cute pair of wedges! However, if you feel uncomfortable wearing heels, a simple pair of gladiator sandals is always a good option.
